Common Sheet Metal Processing Methods for Improved Quality in Sheet Metal Fabrication
Published date: 2023-09-28

As the number of domestic sheet metal processing manufacturers continues to rise, competition in the sheet metal fabrication industry has reached unprecedented levels. Consequently, enhancing the quality of sheet metal

processing has become an inevitable choice for the survival and growth of sheet metal processing enterprises. So, what are the commonly used processing methods for sheet metal fabrication?

Shearing and Sheet Metal Cutting

Shearing is a cutting method that employs opposing circular cutting blades to cut sheet metal. Based on the configuration of the circular blades, shearing can be categorized into three methods: direct shearing, slant shearing,

 and bias shearing.

Sheet Metal

1. Direct Shearing: This method is suitable for cutting sheet metal into strips or transforming square blanks into circular blanks. In direct shearing, align the upper and lower cutting blades along the straight centerline. The gap

between the upper and lower blades typically ranges from 0.05 to 0.5 mm. Alternatively, you can set the upper and lower blades to a slightly overlapping state, ensuring that the stacking height (h) is generally only 0.2-0.3 times

the sheet thickness.

2. Slant Shearing: Slant shearing is widely used for cutting circular blanks or holes within circular shapes. Before cutting, tilt the upper and lower blades at an angle of 25 degrees. Then, adjust the rotation speed and blade gap

based on the thickness of the sheet metal.

3. Bias Shearing: Bias shearing is employed for cutting blanks with irregular curved profiles. When shearing curved shapes, the minimum curvature radius of the workpiece places certain constraints, which depend on the shearing

diameter and half-thickness. This also limits the minimum width error when shearing straight strips.

Sheet Metal Processing Methods

Sheet metal processing can generally be categorized into the following five methods:

1. Single-Step Stamping: This method is often used for processing metal piano components, such as parts with arc distribution, holes, grids, and more. It involves completing the metal structure's separation within a short period,

ultimately achieving the desired metal product's final form.

2. Single or Multiple Sheet Metal Processing: Leveraging CNC machinery, metal components can be stretched and formed in a single step, based on mold selection requirements. If the processed metal components don't meet

the desired specifications, further processing iterations are conducted to achieve the final shape.

3. Continuous Cutting: Continuous cutting methods can be categorized as unidirectional or multidirectional. Multidirectional cutting is typically suitable for horizontal processing of large metal sheets or forming large holes in

metal. Unidirectional processing is employed when multiple metal parts are stacked for processing. The mechanical viewpoints and functions set during continuous cutting vary and yield different processing effects.

4. Array Forming: With CNC machinery, this method is usually employed to meet the demands of mass production. It involves combining multiple existing molds to rapidly process large sheet metal products. During this process,

precision is essential, and the use of metal 5. components for further precision machining is common.

5. Subsequent Precision Machining: Also known as post-crop processing, this method involves polishing and precision machining of metal components. It typically employs processing tools like small circular molds and small

arc

molds. During machining, these tools ensure accurate positioning and precise polishing.
