Material Requirements for Sheet Metal Enclosure Fabrication
Published date: 2023-09-29

In the realm of Sheet Metal enclosure fabrication, one of the commonly used materials is galvanized steel, often referred to as SECC. This material's base substrate is essentially regular cold-rolled

steel coil, which, after undergoing a series of processes including degreasing, pickling, electroplating, and various post-treatments on the galvanization line, transforms into galvanized products.

So, what specific requirements does sheet metal enclosure fabrication have for materials?

Here are the material requirements for sheet metal enclosure fabrication:

1. Weldability: Many automotive sheet metal components are joined together through methods like spot welding, oxygen welding, arc welding, or gas shielded welding. Therefore, sheet metal

components must possess welding properties. This is particularly crucial in automotive repair and maintenance, as materials with good weldability exhibit high welding strength and minimal cracking

tendencies.

2. Excellent Ductility: Materials should have the ability to undergo deformation under external forces without being damaged. For cold-worked components, cold ductility is required, such as in the

case of automotive body stampings. For hot-worked components, thermal ductility is necessary, as seen in hot-forged spring steel plates and hot rivets.

3. Chemical Stability: Most automotive body parts operate in outdoor environments, often coming into contact with water and steam. This is especially true for components like mufflers, which

frequently operate under high temperatures and corrosive gases. Therefore, Sheet Metal components must exhibit chemical stability, meaning they should resist corrosion at room temperature,

possess strong anti-rust capabilities, and remain unaffected by high temperatures or prolonged exposure to sunlight without corrosion or deformation.

4. Cost-Effective: Economic practicality should be a consideration for any automotive component, provided it meets operational requirements. Where black metals can be used, there's no need for

non-ferrous metals, and where non-ferrous metals suffice, there's no need for precious metals. The lifespan of sheet metal automotive components should be in harmony with the lifespans of other

vehicle components.

5. Dimensional Accuracy and Inherent Quality of the Sheet: The dimensional accuracy and inherent quality of the sheet material significantly impact Sheet Metal fabrication, particularly for stamped

components.

In today's world, stainless steel products, including those made from SUS304 stainless steel material, are becoming increasingly common. When compared, products fabricated using this material offer

superior corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and excellent mechanical properties.

Conclusion

In sheet metal enclosure fabrication, the choice of materials plays a crucial role in determining the quality and longevity of the final product. Weldability, ductility, chemical stability, cost-effectiveness,

and dimensional accuracy are all key considerations when selecting materials. Additionally, stainless steel, such as SUS304, is gaining popularity for its exceptional corrosion resistance and mechanical

properties, making it a preferred choice for various applications.
